The company completed a seismic survey of Saveh last year, following the award of the block, south of Tehran, in 2005.
Great Wall Drilling Company's GW-107 rig started drilling at Saveh last month, a source said.
The rig was moved to the site in April, following completion of operations at the Mehr block to the south-west, where it had been operating for OMV.
