Discovered by British Gas geologists in the early 1970s, the Morecambe field, located 40 kilometres west of Blackpool, consists of two reservoirs, South and North Morecambe, divided by a deep geological fault. All these years later it still represents one of the largest accumulations of gas to be found anywhere in the UK's offshore waters.
South Morecambe, developed in 1984/85, comprises a manned central processing complex (CPC) with three bridge-linked platforms for accommodation (AP1); drilling (DP1) and processing (CPP).
