PVEP to drill follow-up well in shallow water off Myanmar

PetroVietnam Exploration & Production (PVEP) will next month spud a follow-up exploration well in its shallow-water permit off Myanmar, following on from its maiden gas discovery last year, writes Russell Searancke.

The company has a three-month contract for the use of the jack-up drilling rig Ensco 104 at a dayrate in the mid-$150,000s, according to rig owner Ensco.

PVEP drilled its first well in Block M-2 in the first half of 2013, and is hoping the new well will build on its discovered resource to underpin a commercial development.

The SYT-1X well was drilled using Shelf Drilling’s jack-up Trident 16 and struck gas, but PVEP decided against using the rig to drill a second planned exploration probe.
