Project sponsor Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Company, or RasGas, awarded a contract estimated at $3.5 billion to build trains 6 and 7 at Ras Laffan to a consortium of Japan's Chiyoda Corporation and France's Technip, while US outfit J Ray McDermott landed the estimated $450 million platforms and pipeline package.

The Chioyda-Technip alliance had long been a favourite to win the liquefaction job, since it was chosen last year to build similar facilities for the Qatargas 2 LNG project that will supply the UK and European markets.
