Lisa Gautier collects human hair from salons that is made into mats to mop up spillages.
However, there are now several thousand kilogrammes building up in storage as the textile factories she sends the hair to to make the mats are closing due to the global recession.
Gautier founded her business - Matter of Trust, a San Francisco non-profit company - in 1998, the Wall Street Journal reported.
