Total has been fined a record £1.125 million ($1.6 million) after admitting failures that led to a blowout and 51-day gas leak, the largest ever in the UK North Sea, at the Elgin field in 2012.
The conviction came almost two years after the UK safety regulator filed its report into the leak to Scotland’s public prosecutors.
The release began on 25 March 2012 when workers lost control of the G4 well during a kill operation.
