Red Rio Petroleum, led by Frederik Dekker, was awarded the Bir Lahlou block in the far north-eastern corner of the disputed territory by the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, which claims sovereignty over the Moroccan-occupied country.
The block, relinquished by Europa Oil & Gas last May, sits on top of part of the Palaeozoic Tindouf basin, which extends east into Algeria and east and south into Mauritania.
