The future of Iraqi Kurdistan is hanging in the balance as it prepares to hold an independence referendum that threatens to inflame ethnic tensions in the disputed oil province of Kirkuk and trigger a potentially bloody conflict with the Iraqi central government in Baghdad.
Neighbours Turkey and Iran, which have large Kurdish populations, are also opposed to the vote, scheduled for 25 September, while the US wants the referendum postponed.
