BP officials had hoped to start drilling two days sooner but poor weather conditions delayed the initial spud.
It is expected to take two to three months for the drillbit to intercept the Macondo wellbore at its total depth of about 18,000 feet. Only then can BP pump fluids downhole into the formation to kill the well. Cement would then be pumped down to seal it.
