The energy ministers, who met on 27 July in the Laos capital Vientiane, agreed that their reliance on external sources of oil will have implications on the security of their energy supply.

"Improvements in energy efficiency and increases in the contribution from renewable energy to supplies are both important for achieving a sustainable energy future," the ministers said in a joint statement.

Boosting the use of renewable energy within the 10 member countries will require increased research and development activities and the implementation of new policies to support renewable energy project investment and construction by the private sector, the ministers noted.
