The UK’s nascent shale gas industry was dealt a further blow this week after a government report showed dwindling public support in England and progress in the field lagging far behind previous expectations.

The report, published by the National Audit Office, also highlighted a lack of regulatory certainty over hydraulic fracturing, in particular over liabilities for onshore well decommissioning.

On the issue of slow progress for the industry in the UK, the report, “Fracking for shale gas in England”, pointed out that the Cabinet Office in 2016 expected up to 20 wells to have been fracked by mid-2020.
