Of the 85,000 net acres held by Vantage, all have drilling rights in the Marcellus shale in Greene County, Pennsylvania and about 52,000 have rights to the deeper Utica shale.
Rice will also acquire 37,000 net acres in the Barnett shale in north Texas through the deal. Vantage had total production of 399 million cubic feet of natural gas per day — about 65% of which came from the Appalachian basin and 35% came from the Barnett shale.
