BRAZILIAN state-controlled operator Petrobras is understood to have suffered the failure of two flexible risers being used to re-inject gas on the Lula field off Brazil.
The incident raises new questions about the technical challenges of producing pre-salt oil and gas, with its heavy carbon dioxide content, in the ultra-deep waters of the Santos basin.
Multiple sources told Upstream that serious failures occurred on the two risers, which were injecting gas from one of several floating production, storage and offloading units handling oil and gas from ultra-productive wells on the field.
