Born on 24 October 1966 in the town of Saratov, Abramovich had lost both his parents, Irina and Arkady, by the time he was four. Young Roman was brought up by his uncle Abram, who took him from the northern town of Syktyvkar to Moscow.
As a teenager, Abramovich lived in a modest flat and attended an ordinary Moscow secondary school.
