A Dutch website first claimed that Shell would next week declare the acquisition of Chevron in a $65 billion stock swap , although the site was later closed. The two companies declined to comment and analysts on both sides of the Atlantic dismissed the rumours as hype. They said such a merger would not make sense. However, Chevron's stock price surged to more than 88 cents.
