Saipem secured the contract last year to lay the 407-kilometre pipeline, and according to sources is deploying three vessels to the task — the launching barge S45, the derrick-laybarge Castoro Otto, as well as the semi-submersible pipelay barge Semac 1.

The 34-inch diameter subsea gas line is made of 200,000 tonnes of steel, and most of it will be laid across the Gulf of Papua where water depths do not exceed 100 metres.
