Norwegian operator Equinor has contracted Italy’s Saipem to deliver subsea drone technology for use at the Njord field in the North Sea, marking the debut of the company's advanced wireless drone services.

Under the €40 million ($43.7 million) deal, Equinor will be the first user of the technology, which is expected to be completed in 2020.

Saipem will use its underwater intervention drone Hydrone-R and the all-electric work class remotely-operated-vehicle Hydrone-W when the Njord field development, off Norway, resumes production in 2020 after an upgrade of the Njord A platform.
