ITALY’S Saipem has started post-sanctions talks with Iran over construction of almost 2000 kilometres of 56-inch gas pipelines once being discussed with Russian companies.

The memorandum of understanding was revealed by Saipem as one of several energy and other agreements signed during this week’s visit to Rome by President Hassan Rouhani.

The president flew on Wednesday from Rome to Paris, where he was expected to oversee agreements mostly focusing on transport projects, including large orders of Airbus aircraft, as well as possible deals with energy companies, including French major Total.
