Italy’s Saipem has launched the first in a series of underwater intervention drones designed to carry out subsea work uninterrupted for a year.

The Hydrone-R, designed by Saipem and its Sonsub division, was launched at Marghera, near Venice on 1 July to begin endurance and qualification tests prior to commercialisation at the end of the year.

Hydrone-R is one of three vehicles in the Saipem-Sonsub Hydrone programme, with the others being Hydrone-S and Hydrone-W.
