Supporters of Senegal’s head of state Macky Sall were swiftly castigated for prematurely declaring victory in the aftermath of last Sunday’s presidential polls, with Prime Minister Mahammad Dionne insisting a clear majority of votes for the incumbent candidate rendered a run-off unnecessary, writes Barry Morgan.
However, main opposition leaders Idrissa Seck and the much younger Ousmane Sonko protested, pleading with the media and religious leaders to patiently await official results and each claiming a second round on 24 March was inevitable.
