The Farragon discovery in BP-operated block 16/28 of the central North Sea lies close to the supermajor's producing Andrew field.
According to BP, the discovery is estimated to contain recoverable reserves of around 30 million barrels of oil.
However, a well-placed source said this estimate is conservative and the find could likely hold more oil. He said that "the well came in better than expected and holds a little more" than BP revealed.
