The revival of the once mothballed field will help Saudi Arabia expand its crude production capacity to 12.5 million barrels per day by 2009 and possibly to 15 million bpd later if required.
The kingdom's current output capacity is about 11 million bpd. Aramco is expected to launch the front-end engineering and design contract for the estimated $1 billion redevelopment of the Manifa field by the end of this year, according to the Middle East Economic Digest.
