Australia's oil and gas industry has welcomed the rejection by a parliamentary committee of an opposition-led effort to ban exploration and production in the Great Australian Bight.
The Great Australian Bight Protection Bill 2016 was introduced by the Greens Party, but the Senate committee — called the Environment & Communications Legislation Committee — recommended it be rejected.
The negative economic impacts of such a ban would be damaging, while more regulatory uncertainty would also be damaging, the committee reported.
