A BP-LED consortium aiming to drill up an oil find with its first exploration well on the Shah Deniz prospect in the Caspian Sea has been warned by Azerbaijan geologists that it is most likely gas and condensate will predominate in the reservoir. Expectations are high among consortium partners that drilling of the deep-water tract off Azerbaijan, located 70 kilometres south-east of Baku, will yield substantial oil reserves although other players have left empty-handed after several earlier unsuccessful exploration efforts in the area this year.
