The oil and gas industry’s rush to the Bakken shale formation in neighbouring North Dakota has made that state the second-largest oil producer in the US.
Montana’s fortunes have failed to shine as bright, but the local industry is keen to point out that the state holds a hefty chunk of the Bakken in its sparsely populated northeastern quadrant.
Development in the play has ensured that Montana obtains much of its oil production — estimated to be about 25 million barrels of oil per year — from the Williston basin, which crosses the borders of Montana, North and South Dakota and the Canadian province of Saskatchewan.
