Norwegian newcomer Shearwater GeoServices is taking a leap forward with a $600 million purchase of Schlumberger’s WesternGeco marine seismic acquisition business.
Shearwater will take over seven 3D vessels, three multipurpose vessels used for ocean-bottom seismic, two source vessels and 12 complete streamer sets with spares, as well as marine seismic technology and manufacturing facilities in Norway and Malaysia.
The deal is a result of the industry downturn, which has hit seismic players hard as oil companies cut exploration spending since the 2014 oil-price slump.
