The Shearwater gas and condensate field has been shut down since last November after pressure problems were detected in well SW08. It is estimated the final bill for lost production and repairs could top £100 million ($146 million).
Sources revealed Health and Safety Executive worries over a possible failure of well SW08 had led the watchdog to insist Shell carries out the work to ensure the additional integrity of the well.
