Two oil spills in the Bodo area of Ogoniland in Rivers State caused extensive damage to local livelihoods more than five years ago, affecting nearly 16,000 individuals to whom £35 million is allocated, with the rest — £20 million — reserved for the wider community.

Shell earlier stated that outright replacement of pipelines was necessary because of extensive corrosion but did nothing, even though admitting some sections contained “major risk and hazard… and that pipelines in Ogoniland have not been maintained properly or integrity assessed for over 15 years”.
