The 141-page report, Petroleum, Pollution&Poverty in the Niger Delta, was launched in Abuja this week and a copy has been sent to Shell's new incoming chief executive Peter Voser.
Amnesty called the situation in the Niger Delta a human rights tragedy, adding that the Nigerian government's regulation of the oil industry has been“wholly inadequate”.
Although the report points the finger at all companies operating in the Niger Delta for causing pollution that it claims affects basic human rights to dink clean water and eat uncontaminated food, Shell came in for the largest share of criticism in its role as the largest operator there.
