Shell’s foray into Alaska’s offshore may have proven costly both financially and reputationally, but some analysts believe there could be a silver lining to the Anglo-Dutch supermajor’s decision to walk away.
Shell said disappointing results from the Burger J exploration well, the high costs associated with the project and the “challenging and unpredictable federal regulatory environment” off Alaska meant it would leave Alaska for the “foreseeable future”, but had not given up hope of success longer-term.
