Shell has concluded it will be of little environmental benefit to attempt a risky removal of the giant concrete gravity-base legs of its Brent platforms as it finalises decommissioning plans for the North Sea platforms that it hopes to hand to the UK government later this year.
In a first public indication of its intentions for abandoning the bulk of the Brent infrastructure, the Anglo-Dutch supermajor said this week it will seek exemptions to be able to leave the legs in place.
