The office will close by the end of this month, a source said. It is not known whether any jobs will be lost as a result.

Shell confirmed the office closure and said that its staff and the Petroleum Unit and Petroleum Brunei had been informed but the company denied that it was scaling back its operations in the country.

"The short to medium-term workload outlook for the SDB office in Bandar Seri Begawan no longer justifies keeping the office open," a Shell spokeswoman said.
