Shwe gas project highlights local troubles

Daewoo International’s multi-billion dollar Shwe gas project in Myanmar has come under fire from locals and non-governmental organisations alike, although most of their grievances lie with the owners and operators of the onshore pipeline that transports Shwe gas across the north of the country for export into neighbouring China.

The Shwe project is currently the largest extractive industries project in Myanmar and is forecast to deliver revenues of $54 billion to the government over a 30-year field life.
