Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, ex-president of Liberia and Africa’s first elected female head of state, hit the headlines last week after an interview with Qatari news agency Al-Jazeera in which the former World Bank economist condemned claims that her son Bob had mismanaged the state oil company.

Sirleaf appointed her scion to chair the National Oil Company of Liberia (Nocal) to encourage Big Oil back into the neglected offshore, but banker Bob stepped down in 2014 when the body's finances fell under scrutiny by lawmakers.
