The new company will also participate equally in the National Petroleum Commission (NPC), which is to be set up by the former warring parties to share the country's oil spoils.

UK-trained petroleum engineer Bullen Bol, a dual UK/Sudan national, has been confirmed as managing director in the new capital Rumbek while moves are afoot to appoint directors and a chairman.

Bol will have to deal with protests from oil companies affronted by the apparent revocation of licences issued by Khartoum, and internal rows over whether some licences issued by the Civil Authority can stand.
