South Sudan is aiming to inject fresh impetus into its upstream sector after handing South Africa’s state-owned Strategic Fuel Fund (SFF) an exploration and production sharing agreement for acreage in Jonglei State, writes Barry Morgan.

SFF has committed to spend more than $50 million on exploration and may consider building a pipeline and refinery, which would increase potential investments up to $1 billion, according to South Sudan’s Petroleum Minister Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth.
