Mediation talks backed by the regional Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) had been adjourned on 7 April following an increase of violence on both sides.
European Union envoy Alexander Rondos urged former vice president-turned rebel leader Riek Machar, an ethnic Nuer, to meet President Salva Kiir, an ethnic Dinka, to avert a genocidal civil war.
Rondos’ call was backed by delegates from the International Contact Group comprising African, US, British and Norwegian diplomats who also visited Machar in his bush camp located in the oil-producing Upper Nile State.
