Norwegian operator Equinor’s Sputnik discovery has opened up a new Barents Sea play that oil companies and Norwegian authorities believe can reveal several large discoveries.
The company last week completed the wildcat in production licence 855, with preliminary estimates putting the Triassic sandstone light oil find at 20 million to 65 million barrels of oil equivalent.
Sputnik will probably provide valuable additional resources to Equinor’s 440 million-barrel Wisting development, which lies about 30 kilometres to the southwest.
