The service giant bid $690 million for the first of two 500-well contracts up for tender, more than 7% below Weatherford International's $743 million price tag, according to sources involved in the process.

Halliburton was in third place with a bid of $854 million and Baker Hughes was fourth with $1.87 milllion.

The industry was on tenterhooks this week to see the outcome of bidding on the second 500-well package, slated for ?26 February.
