Swan Hills Synfuels is proposing a C$1.5 billion project to transform uneconomic coal into synthetic gas underground.
This syngas will be used to generate electricity and will capture up to 1.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide for enhanced oil recovery in the area.
The deal was signed nearly two years after the Canadian province announced its C$2 billion CCS funding plan.
Alberta Energy Minister Ron Liepert said the province will “decrease the environmental impact while generating a reliable energy supply”.
