Taisun takes the strain
THE Taisun, billed by its owner Yantai Raffles Shipyard as the world’s biggest gantry crane, has reached another milestone by achieving what the yard calls the world’s heaviest ever commercial lift. On 17 December, Taisun, named after a mountain in Shandong, China, where Yantai is based, lifted the deckbox of Saipem’s semi-submersible rig Scarabeo 9, previously known as Frigstad D90. Scarabeo 9 is a sixth-generation rig with a DP3 system designed for working in water depths of up to 3657 metres. Yantai Raffles deputy chairman Brian Chang (pictured) said: “This is another major feat for Yantai Raffles.”
