“We believe there is petroleum in Lake Tanganyika and this MoU is designed to allow us to exchange experiences in exploration and exploitation of petroleum,” said DRC President Joseph Kabila. In 2011, Tanzania awarded a block on the northern side of Lake Tanganyika to Total, which will shortly lead construction of a $3.5 billion pipeline routing Ugandan crude from Hoima to the Tanzanian port of Tanga for export.
The pipeline is scheduled for completion in 2020.
Also discussed between Kabila and his Tanzanian counterpart John Magafuli was mutual co-operation in the proposed oil pipeline project to be constructed from Uganda to Tanzania, because the DRC will also in the next few years seek to export its own Albertine Graben oil production through that pipeline.
