Japanese operator Mitsui E&P has hit gas in the primary and secondary targets of the Kohatukai-1 exploration well in New Zealand's onshore Taranaki basin.
The secondary Matapo sandstone was hit at 3602 metres depth, with elevated mud gas readings indicating the presence of gas. New Zealand Oil & Gas (NZOG) said gas was also seen in the primary target — the Mangahewa sands — at a depth 3680 and 3801 metres.
