THE US Minerals Management Service is planning to offer royalty relief incentives to companies that drill deep gas or subsalt wells on the the Gulf of Mexico shelf. The offer will come in conjunction with the next proposed notice of lease sale and is a response to concerns over gas production capacity. The MMS believes that 4 trillion cubic feet to 16 Tcf of gas reserves could lie in deeper plays or in water depths of less than 670 feet.
