The French contractor has been competing against Australia’s Worley­Parsons for more than a year for the contract, during which time both companies were required to submit bids on two occasions by project owner PTTEP of Thailand.

Sources said Technip, headed by chief executive Thierry Pilenko, had bid aggressively for the job.

The shallow-water project, soon to be renamed Zawtika, comprises a large central processing platform, wellhead platforms and a 260-
kilometre subsea gas trunkline.
