Algeria’s army chief has vowed to guarantee security and prevent a return to an era of bloodshed amid nationwide protests against the rule of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, writes Nassir Shirkhani.

Algeria, a major oil and gas exporter to Europe, has enjoyed peace for the past two decades since the army put down a persistent and often violent Islamist movement.

Chief of Staff General Gaed Salah said there were some parties, which he did not name, that wanted Algeria to return to the “years of pain,” referring to civil war in the 1990s.
