Thailand goes to the polls on Sunday in a general election that is essentially seen as pitting the incumbent military government against populist parties linked to ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and parties that stand against continuing military rule, writes Amanda Battersby.

The junta, which has ruled Thailand since seizing power in a 2014 coup, is looking to bring back its leader, General Prayut Chan-o-cha, as prime minister in the 24 March polls via the Palang Prachart party.
