"I came to California from North Carolina in the 1960s and fell in love with the Venice skyline. I had never seen an oil derrick before and there were rows of them along the beach. They looked like wonderful abstract sculptures."
Cowans spent the next few years painting the derricks and "listening to the squeaky pumps and talking with residents and workmen".
