Etienne Roux’s introduction to the oil and gas business came when, as a young engineer in South Africa’s gold industry, he stumbled upon an opportunity with a company he had never even heard of.

“There was a recruitment ad in the local paper,” recalls Roux, now the president of drilling and evaluation at energy services company Weatherford.

“I can still remember to this day that it had this plane flying into the sunset and said: Want to see the world and earn US dollars?"

“I'm sitting in a gold mine in South Africa and I'm like, ‘that's what I'm going to do!’”

Roux had what he calls a “small-town” upbringing in South Africa.
