Sources said the competition for the unit — which is destined for Maersk’s challenging Culzean project in the UK North Sea — is between Tokyo-headquartered Modec, Oslo-listed Sevan Marine and Teekay Offshore Partners, which owns a 40% stake in Sevan and is listed in New York.

Modec is understood to be offering a ship-shape solution, while the proposals from both Sevan and Teekay are based on a cylindrical vessel.
